1. Examine the salt codfish for saltiness. If the fish is very salty, freshen it by soaking in lukewarm water for 15–30 minutes, then drain and pat dry with a clean cloth.
2. Preheat a broiler to high, or prepare a grill over medium-high heat. Grease a wire broiler basket or grill rack thoroughly to prevent sticking.
3. Place the strips of salt codfish on the greased wire broiler in a single layer. Broil 3–5 inches (8–13 cm) from the heat source until the first side is brown and lightly crisped, approximately 3–5 minutes — the flesh should be opaque and beginning to show golden-brown color at the edges.
4. Turn each strip and brown the second side for an additional 3–5 minutes, until both sides are uniformly golden brown and the fish is heated through and firm to the touch.
5. Remove to a serving platter and immediately spread with butter, allowing the residual heat to melt it into the fish. Serve at once.
